The Route
Overview
The Rongai Route is Kilimanjaro's only route approaching from the north, starting near the Kenyan border. This remoteness means you'll encounter far fewer trekkers than on the southern routes — often having the trail entirely to yourself.
The northern approach is also the driest side of the mountain, making Rongai an excellent choice during the rainy seasons when other routes can be muddy and slippery. The gradual ascent profile provides good acclimatization, though the route doesn't follow the ideal 'climb high, sleep low' pattern as well as Machame or Lemosho.
The route joins the Marangu Route near Kibo Hut for the summit attempt, descending via the Marangu trail through the rainforest. This gives you the experience of two different routes in one trek.
Rongai is ideal for trekkers who value solitude, prefer drier conditions, or are trekking during the shoulder seasons.
